No campfires allowed in Port Moody

PORT MOODY (NEWS 1130) — As summer weather rolls in, you may be tempted to light up a campfire and roast a marshmallow, but firefighters in Port Moody say don’t even think about it: there’s a year-round ban on open fires.

Fire Chief Ron Coulson says they’ve been seeing evidence of campfires in forested areas, and that’s definitely a problem.

“We’re concerned that with the forest floor conditions and the amount of fuel and drying conditions, that’s a danger to our community,” he says.

Warmer weather is drying out the forests, making it easier for fires to spread.

Coulson is out with a reminder that fire pits, campfires and bonfires are not allowed in the city any time of the year.

“We’ve had some citizens that have contacted us after having come across the remnants of localized campfires in our park system, and that’s concerning for us, because that means people are getting way into areas that are not easily seen,” he says.

Burning cigarette butts are another problem to be aware of, he says, warning people to make sure they dispose of them properly.
