Summer is over later today, time to plant some veggies and spring bulbs

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Summer may officially be ending later today (Saturday at 6:54 p.m.), but that doesn’t mean gardening season is over — quite the opposite actually.

Miles Hunter with Hunters Garden Centre, says now’s the time to plant any shrubs, things like Rhododendrons so they can strengthen their routes before flowering next year, as well as for any spring bulbs.

“Crocus, Tulips, Daffodils absolutely need to be planted now. You can’t plant them in the spring. They need to grow in the ground, grow a route system, so that they are strong enough and healthy enough to flower in the spring,” Hunter explains. “Dig the soil, loosen it up, add some compost or manure to the soil, add a granule of fertilizer.”

If you are looking to spruce up your salads and other vegetable dishes next year, you can also plant those now.

“(Early to mid September is) a great time to plant your fall and winter vegetables. So growing lettuces, cabbage, Kale, Swiss Chard, now’s the time to plant those, too, ” he adds.

You should be able to harvest those in the spring, depending on weather, of course.
