Police arrest man for jumping in cruiser, spraying people with fire extinguisher

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It took close to a dozen officers and even the use of a bean bag gun to take down a distraught man in Downtown Vancouver this morning.

Sergeant Jason Robillard says the VPD got calls of an agitated man fighting with security at the Fairmont Hotel.

‘The man was fighting with security at the hotel. They believed he was having a mental health crisis at the time. At one point the man had gotten hold of a fire extinguisher and was spraying random people.’

Police found the man and, after several attempt to calm him down, they took more extreme measures.

“The officer deployed what is called a less-lethal bean bag several times at the man, and it seemed to have little to no effect and he continued on with his dramatic and very unsafe behaviour,” Robillard said.

The man even managed to duck into a VPD cruiser at one point, but he wasn’t able to drive away.

‘He actually ran into a police cruiser and got into the front seat of the car. One of the officers had the door open, it’s at this time that several officers were able to detain the man.’

The man is in his mid 30’s to early 40’s, and was taken to hospital with minor injuries sustained after being hit repeatedly by beanbags. A security officer working at the hotel was also taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The suspect is facing several criminal charges.
