Next phase of New West’s Royal Columbian Hospital going ahead

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – New Westminster’s Royal Columbian Hospital is getting another facelift.

The province is pressing ahead with its plans for the facility with a massive $1.35-billion redevelopment. A new acute care tower, as well as an expanded emergency department are all part of the expansion.

Phase two will start on Sept. 27 when the government puts out a design and build bid. Construction is expected to start in 2020 and be completed by 2024.

Minister of Health Adrian Dix said upgrades to the building will help meet the growing needs of the hospital and the people who use it.

“With more and more people relying on Royal Columbian for the care they need, our job is to make sure this hospital continues to meet that growing demand,” Dix said. “The expansion we’re planning will deliver better care across the board, from emergency services to diagnostic services to acute care.”

The rebuild includes a new 75-bed mental health centre, a new 450-stall parkade, an energy centre and heliport.

When complete, facilities will include 229 new beds shared with the emergency department and acute care tower, more MRI machines, and a neonatal intensive care unit, and a rooftop heliport.
